Three Days To Forget.

Indian Cricket Team's Abject Surrender.

A No-Show

Well, this was not just another loss. We arrived in South Africa to win; never having won a test series. That dream was blown away in three days. None of the Indian batsmen nor the bowlers were able to stay and play, except for Rahul, Kohli & Bumrah. The rest of the team were no-shows.

Rahul in the first innings and Kohli in the second were the only batsmen whose contributions gave a touch of respectability to the team total. Without their scores, the contributions from the rest were not good enough. Apart from Bumrah, the rest of the bowlers did not bowl well. Most of their efforts were not as expected at a test level.

India’s surrender, let’s put it this way, rapid surrender was depressing to watch. They did not stay and fight, they did not go toe-to-toe with the Proteas. Losing without a fight is difficult to digest and that too while playing on the South African pitches, which are well known to give competing teams a sporting chance.

Kudos to South Africa, they played well and played to win. Had our batsmen applied themselves just like the South Africans did and our bowlers bowled better, it would have been a match to watch and appreciate.

An unhappy ending, especially considering that the Proteas exploited the pitch better than the Indian team.

Here's an extract from an article by Sidharth Monga [www.espncricinfo.com]. The extract is a quote from 'Rohit Sharma', the captain of the Indian team.

Quote - 'Rohit Sharma'

"We might have put in this performance here, but don't forget what we did in Australia and England," he said. "We won the series in Australia on the back of our batting. We drew the series in England through our batting and bowling. These performances can happen. It doesn't mean we don't know how to bat outside India. Sometimes the opposition performs better than us. I think on those terms. The opposition played better than us. That's why they won. Not that we couldn't bat even 110 overs. Go and check the results over the last four years or last four tours."

In a nutshell, the gist basically refers to past heroics and admitting that these things happen and that they played better than us.

It’s quite obvious that the South African’s played better than the Indian team.

Why did the Indian team not put up a fight? Everybody loses now and then. A loss after a well fought match is understandable and admirable.

Admitting mistakes, not referencing past achievements, and not just promising, but also doing better, and not repeating the same mistakes are words we would love to hear.

India's Performance at Centurion

India's performance at SuperSport Park Centurion has not been that good in tests. In three test matches, India has registered one win (Dec 2021) and Two losses ( Jan 2018 & Dec 2010) at a win ratio of 33%. Virat Kohli was the most successful batsman with 153 runs facing 217 balls & Mohammad Shami (8 wickets from 107 balls).
